The Guided Study Program

PCS emphasizes the value of regular classroom attendance, teacher instruction and group discussion. The Guided Study Program, unique to PCS and administered by our Academic Dean, is designed for students who are unable to be in class because of professional activities. It is an extension of the regular curriculum, and parallels classroom instruction in each course. The length of time a student is on Guided Study and the number of courses taken on Guided Study depend upon the nature of the professional obligation. For example, music students who need extra practice time before auditions and performances, ballet dancers in rehearsal, or models and actors on location for short periods will take all of their courses on Guided Study for a few days or weeks. Actors or dancers on tour or on location, or equestrians competing out-of-state, may take all courses on Guided Study for several months. Finally, there are students whose regular professional schedule always conflicts with an academic class; they may be on Guided Study in one course for an entire semester or year, while attending class in their other courses. Permission to go on Guided Study for more than a few days must be granted by the Academic Dean. PCS monitors attendance carefully and students are expected to attend classes daily, unless permission has been granted to enroll in Guided Study. In all cases, advance notification is required.

How it Works

Students are given bi-weekly assignments for each academic course which may be accessed on the school's website. Assignments and procedures are designed for students to follow independently while they are away from school. Completion of work on Guided Study enables students to successfully return to their classes. Opportunities for consultation, guidance and correction are provided, either by regular appointments with the teacher or, when distance makes this impractical, by e-mail, fax and telephone.

What Happens When a Student is on Guided Study?

You chose PCS for your son or daughter for many reasons, one of which is because its academic program is designed to support students’ professional pursuits.  Sometimes students’ professional commitments require that they miss school for a period of three consecutive days or more, and that is when students go on Guided Study.  Whether in NYC or away, students on Guided Study are able to keep up with their schoolwork and return to school better prepared to rejoin their classmates.
